Everything you need to know before stepping onto the mats.
Absolutely not! Most of our members started with zero martial arts experience. We have dedicated beginner classes and fundamentals programs designed specifically for people who've never trained before. You'll learn everything from the ground up in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
Yes! Your first class is completely free with no obligation to sign up. We want you to experience what we're about before making any commitment. Just book a trial class through our website and come see if FJJ is the right fit for you.
For your first class, just wear comfortable athletic clothes—shorts or tracksuit pants and a t-shirt are fine. For Gi classes, we can lend you a gi (the uniform). For No-Gi classes, a rash guard and shorts work best, but regular athletic wear is okay to start. Just make sure nails are trimmed and remove any jewellery.
Definitely not! BJJ is for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. The beauty of BJJ is that it's technique-based, not strength-based. Many people start in their 40s, 50s, and beyond. You'll build fitness as you train—you don't need to be fit to start. We meet you where you are and help you progress at your own pace.
For beginners, we recommend 2-3 times per week. This gives your body time to recover while maintaining momentum with your learning. As you progress and your body adapts, you can increase frequency if you want. Consistency is more important than intensity—showing up regularly will get you further than sporadic intense training.
In Gi BJJ, you wear a traditional uniform (kimono) and can use it for grips, chokes, and control. It tends to be more technical and slower-paced. No-Gi is done in rash guards and shorts—it's faster, more athletic, and relies more on body control. Both are valuable; many people train both. We recommend starting with whichever appeals to you more, then trying the other.
BJJ is designed to be practiced safely. Unlike striking arts, you can train at full intensity with a partner without hurting each other because you can "tap out" before any submission causes harm. Minor bumps and bruises are normal, but serious injuries are rare when training with proper technique and good partners. We emphasise safety and controlled training at FJJ.
Our junior program accepts children from age 3. We have two age-appropriate groups – Juniors (ages 3-7) and Kids (ages 8-15) – to ensure children train with others at their developmental level. Classes focus on fun, discipline, coordination, and BJJ fundamentals. It's a great way for children to build confidence, make friends, and learn self-defence in a safe environment.
Yes! We have dedicated women's only classes for those who prefer a women-only training environment. These classes are great for beginners who want to build confidence and skills before joining mixed classes, though you're welcome to stay in women's only classes as long as you like. Check our schedule for times.
